“True love can’t be strategized.

After book blogger Vivian Galdi’s longtime crush pretends their secret summer kissing sessions never happened, Vivian creates a list of safe crushes, determined to protect her heart.

But nerd-hot Dallas, the sweet new guy in town, sends the mission and Vivian’s zing meter into chaos. While designing software for the bookstore where Vivian works, Dallas wages a counter-mission.

Operation Replacement Crush is in full effect. And Dallas is determined to take her heart off the shelf.”

& 1/2

I found The Replacement Crush by Lisa Brown Roberts to be:
  • Disappointing
  • Uneventful
  • But An Ending I Enjoyed
I requested The Replacement Crush from NetGalley because the premise sounded enjoyable. A bookish heroine determined to find a new crush, one that won’t break her heart, but will inevitably be drawn to the new boy?

Yes, please!

Unfortunately, The Replacement Crush and I just did not click.

This book was really hard to get into. The beginning moved so slowly because there was a lot of telling within the first several chapters. We were given a lot of back story: she’d sneak out to make out, and that her BFF thought the guy was a jerk. But it only took two seconds after meeting the guy to figure that out for myself.

The telling eased up some as the pages passed, but that dragging never really did.

I don’t understand a lot of what went on in this book. I don’t mean that the language was difficult or there were complex plot lines, but rather I don’t get the basics.

Basically as soon as Vivian sees Dallas, she starts calling him McNerd, a hot McNerd but still a McNerd. Why, Vivian? Have you taken a good look at yourself in the mirror lately? You are exactly the same. Then all her friends pushed her on him, saying he should be her number one replacement target. I guess that’s okay, him being new meat and all, except none of them really interact with him at the start. How do you know he is perfect for her at the start when you’ve only really seen him from afar?

The last part of the book was really good. Once we moved passed the stalling and the “we don’t like each other” bits and Vivian decides to act on her feelings, the book becomes exactly what I wanted it to be. I gave The Replacement Crush an extra half a star rating for that alone.

Overall

Reading The Replacement Crush felt a lot like watching a teen drama on television. I tried so hard to get into it but it was really hard to get over her excessive resistance to him and his reactions to her actions. I kept thinking we’d finally moved on to her moving forward with her feelings territory only to be tossed yards back.
