I Gave Them A Shot - DNF Finish Part Four And Recap (The Eh Files)

Thursday, December 31, 2015

The Eh Files - Did Not Finish (DNF) Edition - Paper Bindings

For all those books rated from DNF to, but not including, three stars, I present to you The 'Eh' Files. At the end of each month I'll be listing all those books that make this category. Since I am aware that some books that are not my cup of tea, but may be something other readers enjoy, I'll include a couple of sentences explaining my rating choice.

The DNF Edition

I have decided this past year that I have way to many books I want to read to force myself to finish books I am not into. It has been a year of cleaning out my ereaders and taking an ax to my TBR. (Check out Part OnePart Two / Part Three)

“She’s more gunpowder than girl—and the fate of the desert lies in her hands.

Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mystical beasts still roam the wild and barren wastes, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinni still practice their magic. But there's nothing mystical or magical about Dustwalk, the dead-end town that Amani can't wait to escape from.

Destined to wind up "wed or dead," Amani’s counting on her sharpshooting skills to get her out of Dustwalk. When she meets Jin, a mysterious and devastatingly handsome foreigner, in a shooting contest, she figures he’s the perfect escape route. But in all her years spent dreaming of leaving home, she never imagined she'd gallop away on a mythical horse, fleeing the murderous Sultan's army, with a fugitive who's wanted for treason. And she'd never have predicted she'd fall in love with him...or that he'd help her unlock the powerful truth of who she really is.”

1. She is not crazy.

2. Her mother was murdered.

3. Someday she is going to find the killer and make him pay.

As certain as Grace is about these facts, nobody else believes her -- so there's no one she can completely trust. Not her grandfather, a powerful ambassador. Not her new friends, who all live on Embassy Row. Not Alexei, the Russian boy next door, who is keeping his eye on Grace for reasons she neither likes nor understands.

Everybody wants Grace to put on a pretty dress and a pretty smile, blocking out all her unpretty thoughts. But they can't control Grace -- no more than Grace can control what she knows or what she needs to do. Her past has come back to hunt her . . . and if she doesn't stop it, Grace isn't the only one who will get hurt. Because on Embassy Row, the countries of the world stand like dominoes, and one wrong move can make them all fall down.”

Tamora Pierce 2016 Reading Challenge

Thursday, December 17, 2015

Paper Bindings - Tamora Pierce 2016 Reading Challenge Hosted by Nori @ ReadWriteLove28

I wasn't going to sign up for any 2016 challenges. First I failed that goal with the Rock My TBR one, and I'm failing it again with this one.

Why sign up for another challenge?

Because I have heard so much about Tamora Pierce and all of her books that I already decided I was going to read one of her books soon. When I asked what one I should read first, Nori (@ Readwritelove28) told me to wait a bit for the answer. Turns out, it was because she had the challenge all planned out.

The #RockMyTBR Book Tag And All The Smashing Books I Plan To Devour

Monday, December 14, 2015

Paper Bindings - #RockMyTBR 2016 Reading Challenge Book Tag

So Sarah over at The YA Book Traveler (with the help of Rachel @bargainsnbooks and Mikayla @rosieposiekayla) has created a book tag to go along with her 2016 Rock My TBR reading challenge.

If you missed my post from yesterday, then you might have missed how I decided this challenge was perfect for me and rushed to sign up. (You really should go back and read my sign up post, it has my list of books to be read on it. Maybe you want to buddy read something with me?)

Already this is shaping up to a fun challenge and we haven't even reached 2016 yet.

And now for the tag.

((Since most of my books are in storage for the time being, I only included ones I have with me below.))

#ROCKMYTBR Challenge I will Own You

Sunday, December 13, 2015

Paper Bindings

After abandoning, my 2015 challenges because I wasn't feeling them anymore, I decided I wasn't going to do any for 2016.

That lasted a week. Because Sarah over at The YA Book Traveler just had to come up with a cool name for a TBR challenge. I'm a sucker for catchy titles. And since I was basically planning on doing this challenge on my own, I decided that I would join in. Because there is safety (and motivation) in numbers.

Book Let Me List The Reasons I Love You So- Truthwitch (ARC review)

Friday, December 11, 2015

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

TITLE: Truthwitch (The Witchlands #1)
AUTHOR: Susan Dennard
RELEASE DATE: January 5th 2016
PUBLISHER: Tor
“On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery”, a magical skill that sets them apart from others.

In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well.

Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.

Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness.

Safi and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.”

Paper Bindings - I Should Have Read These Author's Books A Long Time Ago (Top Ten Tuesday)
A weekly book meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's theme is the Top Ten New To Me Favorite Authors I Read For The First Time In 2015:

Since I was concentrating on catching up on already started series, I didn’t read many new authors. So this list is practically the few I did read. (In no order.)

Fallout by Gwenda BondDouble Down by Gwenda Bond

01. Gwenda Bond- I saw a little story reimagining the life of a young Lois Lane sitting there on the lists of books that were going to be at BEA. But when I made it to the signing, the line already wrapped around the booth and then some. So I thought I missed out on it, but as fate would have it, I was not meant to leave without this book. One my way out, I had that gut feeling to swing by the booth to see if they had any left overs. To my happy surprise, there was only a few people there and the author was still signing. This series was fantastic. I am looking forward to getting the other books by Gwenda Bond.

Paper Bindings - The Top Five Assumptions About Readers That I Encounter All The Time

I don't know if you are anything like me, but....

...if you are then a lot people you meet in your daily lives have quite a few assumptions about you based upon your reading habits. After all, not just anyone can make it into the ranks of Bookworms and Booknerds. It takes a special skill set to be accepted as one of us.

Not too long ago, a coworker of mine basically accused me of being a shy loser with no friends because I liked to read books on my phone during my work break.
